Some months ago, as I waited for a meeting, a man believed to be in his 60’s walked into the venue . His face was exactly the one I had seen in the notification of the meeting initially sent to me. Even though old, his smart look in his T-shirt and blue stone jean endeared me to him. He was walking smarter than some of we younger generations.
I approached him to steal like 2 minutes of conversation. His warm smile and soft “Elizabethan English” confirmed that he is an old man in a young skin. I recounted all the big things I had read about him and how he must be a very rich man. He smiled and replied me thus, ‘YOUNG MAN, DON’T MAKE THE MISTAKE OF MY YOUTH’. That response punctured my enthusiasm but I waited for him to explain what he meant by that statement.
I asked him what the mistake of his youth was. His response went thus ‘ “I ALLOWED CRITICISM TO GET MY HEART AND COMPLIMENT TO MY HEAD”.
Those words bothered me so much because this man in front of me is one of the most accomplished men I had ever met.
After 20 minutes of conversation, he ended by saying, ‘I WOULD HAVE BEEN GREATER THAN THIS’. I went away from that man with a big lesson.
DON’T ALLOW CRITICISM TO GET TO YOUR HEART AND COMPLIMENT TO YOUR HEAD.
A word is enough for the wise!
